The old Cottage
Old School House
Plaque on School
Further Information:

This picture shows the old school house which dates back to 1799 and was used at the old Grammar
school under control of St Hillary's Parish until 1851.  The School was also known as Henry Meoles
Senior Comprehensive School.  The building is now a privately owned residential house.  Close
examination shows that it has had the East window bricked up as can be seen in the picture above.  In
addition the original door way on the opposite side has also been bricked up and one of the original
windows has been made into the present day entrance.  The church of St Hilary's would have began
educating the children of Wallasey around the 16th century which would have taken place inside the
church itself.  In Noel E Smiths book, the story of Wallasey, he states that parish register of St Hillary's
shows a headmaster was buried there as far back as 1595.

The site of the building shown above is just below where the old Wallasey Mill stood and records
shows that prior to building this school, the old mill was actually used as a classroom on a temporary
basis.  The first school which was destroyed hundreds of years ago stood next to St Hillary's Church.
The building can be seen clearly when walking or driving along Breck Road on the left hand side when
leaving the village.
